Please Save BBC 6 Music
BBC 6 Music is the digital radio station, which you can only listen on the internet(open this link and click “Listen live” on the up right.) and DAB digital radio.
This radio station started 2002, and this is the year when I moved to England. Even though I can listen to it with the Internet, I bought very expensive DAB radio few month after I found 6 Music just for this radio station.
They play mixture of new/old and eclectic, all kinds of music that is not too mainstream. All DJs are real music lovers, and this station is the legacy of the late John Peel (on the picuture above) who always looking for new/interesting bands/sounds and introduced to us with profound love of music. I think not only the bands/musicians found by him but most of other British bands are a kind of his children.
As I have been a big UK music fan ever since I was a teenager, I was really looking forward to living here. But Radio 1 and Top of the Pops were already disappointing state, or at least they were not in the way I dreamed of. Then I found this radio station and love it ever since.
The beauty of this radio station is as BBC is the public broadcaster, distinctive choice of its play lists. No other even BBC radio stations nor commercial sector can do. I suppose any other radio stations all over the world can do the same. Truly, the one and only music station.
However, in the name of scale back of BBC, Director General Mark Thompson announced 6 Music and Asian Network’s closure. It’s said that this is because we expected government change on the next election from Labour to Conservatives, which always demand BBC to cut back its scale. And I have to say that behind the conservative party, there is a big name supporter, Rupert Murdock who own the Sun, The Times, The Sunday Times in UK. He also wants to break up BBC in order to strengthen his control over UK media. BBC have to show the (next) government that they make effort of cutting back with the strategy they announced 2 March 2010, including the closure of these two digital radio stations.
Both station plays vital role in UK media. 6 Music provide music no other radio stations play at all, introducing new music to the world, and maybe young music fans can also enjoy old music as well. For British music industry, it can be a showcase of new talent.
If we lose it now, it would be a huge loss for whole British music industry and culture.
I’m sorry as I have never listened to Asian Network, I cannot say many things about this. But I’ve heard one of its DJs said on the news program yesterday that this station is to help Asian communities integrate into British society and cultivate British Asian culture, or British Asian identity. As we have a lots of problems stems from the isolation from the mainstream society these days, it is now when we need this kind of radio station. Am I wrong?
So we need these radio stations to stay.
What you can do to help them is go to
fill the survey and have a say to BBC Trust that will review the strategy set up by Mark Thompson later based on the survey. So it is important say our view.
